Keene Farm hut, summer The Keene Farm is located within the Adirondack Forest Reserve near Keene in northern New York State, USA, 160 km from Montreal, approximately 60km southwest of the city of Plattsburgh. Being located in the heart of the High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Park. There are many nearby rock climbing areas and an extensive system of trails for day hiking, Keene Farm Hut, winter backpacking, biking and canoeing. In the winter, there is good ice climbing, winter mountaineering, snowshoeing as well as downhill, backcountry and cross-country skiing. This 105 acre property of meadow and woodland provides both camping facilities and a large cabin that accommodates up to 32 people.

What can I expect?

Keene Farm picnic area, summer

  • A Two Story rustic wood cabin with wood stove heating and gas lighting
  • Gas burners for cooking, utensils, plates and pots are available
  • Dormitory room with enough foam mats to sleep 32 people.
    You will need to bring your own sleeping bag or sheets and blanket.
  • The Cabin is located less than 100m away from the parking lot. A trolley can be used to bring gear and food up to the cabin.
  • Water from an artesian well (boiling, filtering or chemically treating the water is recommended)
  • A woody meadow with locations for numerous tents
  • Enough picnic tables for everyone
  • A roofed picnic area
  • A communal fire pit for great evenings
  • Out houses with toilet paper
  • Quite time on at Keene Farm is from 11PM to 7AM
  • A lost objects box in the kitchen
  • Smiling people, good company, great location

The cabin is locked when nobody volunteered to serve as custodian.
Please consider helping by volunteering to be a custodian for a day or two,
just let us know in the reservation form. See how easy it is to be a custodian.

Campground can be used anytime, an iron ranger1) is available for self registration.

What should I do?

Keene Farm Meadow, summer

  • Before going to Keene Farm
    1. Make a reservation online at least 2 days before your stay
    2. Have your payment ready (exact change), the reservation form will compute the amount for you
    3. Have you gear and papers ready:
      • membership card2),
      • border papers like passport or special driver license3) and
      • the exact amount for the payment as we are no longer able to provide change.
    4. To save on gas, help the environment and make friends you may want to car-pool to get there… check our mailing list
    5. Make sure you bring your food and sleeping gear
  • When you arrive
    • register with the custodian or at the iron ranger located next to the water pump about 20m from the cabin, next to the garage.
  • Before leaving
    1. please make sure you leave the place in a better condition than you found it when you arrived
    2. please bring all your belongings (including garbage) back with you
  • Back home
    1. Send us feedback (positive or negative), comments and questions.
    2. Share your pictures and stories. I'm sure others would like to hear about it.
    3. Come back to see us!

What should I bring?

Hut Stay

  • Food (gas stove, plates, utensils and pots are provided)
  • sandals or shoes for inside
  • sleeping bag or sheets and blankets (mats are provided, hut is heated with a wood stove in the winter)
  • your smile

Keene Farm Field in the fall Campground Stay

  • Obviously all your camping gear
    picnic tables and roofed picnic area are provided
  • Often a common fire is made at night, you may want to bring your share of wood4)
    Please note that cut/split firewood for the house is for house heating use only… imagine if we didn't have enough wood for heating in the following winter!

Our facilities are maintained and staffed by volunteers like you.
The Cabin cannot be opened without a custodian.

Cabin and Camping Rules

As a guest you are requested to:

  • register with the custodian and sign the logbook
  • use clean footwear in the house – only stocking feet allowed upstairs.
  • keep your things together and clean after yourself.
  • respect others.
  • respect quiet time and lights out between 11:00pm and 7:00am
  • bring your garbage and unused food back home with you
  • empty water containers if you are the last one to leave
  • keep pets outside the house and under control
  • smoke only in the lower parking lot to minimize fire hazard, please you your car ash tray
  • leave the house in better condition than you found it when you arrived.

Wood use:

  • Only the Custodian has the right to put wood in the stoves
  • for kitchen stove, shorter wood is stacked under the entrance porch. It is cut to size
  • for living room stove, wood is stacked under the front porch.

  • Full time students pay half the rates - a valid student id is required
  • There is no charge for member's children 16 and under, but an adult ACC member must accompany them.
  • Group leaders are responsible for registering, collecting the fees and the actions of their group.
  • Please note that overnight campers are not allowed to use the house for eating unless they pay the house overnight rate.
For comparison, the national chain of campgrounds/huts located nearby
charges at least 400% more for camping and cabin use than the ACC Montreal member's rate.

2) You need to show your membership card to get members' rate
3) Only driver license with the chip are now accepted as an ID at the border, regular ones are no longer enough.
4) dead wood from the forest may also be used
5) The Custodian sleep for free, if and only if, he/she volunteer to be custodian at reservation time by checking the box in the reservation form AND if there are more than 5 people in the hut to be custodian for.
